Lead Editor

As the Lead Editor, you will oversee quality coming out of the Editing department: working closely with Directors, Animators, Digital Asset Managers and Editors on projects, you will ensure that Editors are delivering on creative concepts, editing style guides and post-production workflows. You’ll also review video edits and work intensively with Editors to ensure work is of the highest quality, meets course objectives and pushes Lobster Ink’s standards around learning and creativity. From a ‘People’ perspective, you will oversee freelance Editors on projects, and manage in-house Editors as your direct reports. You’ll work closely with the Post-Production Operations Manager to drive training and development across the Editing department – leading the way in a demanding, innovative and people-driven environment. 


Key Responsibilities

To steer collaboration between Directors and Editors: ensuring creative concepts set out in the Director’s Treatment and editing style guide are implemented in the video lessons, and that both Director and Editors are aligned

To review shots lists and make sure what is proposed is efficient and allows enough time, as well as providing support and troubleshooting with the Editors, Directors and Producers during the scheduling of resources

To oversee editing on a project: working closely with Editors to ensure all work produced follows the creative brief, Director’s Treatment and editing style guide

To conduct the review and approval of editing completed on a project to guarantee that work is of the highest quality, meets course objectives, and matches style guidelines set out in the Director’s Treatment, creative brief and editing style guide

To troubleshoot and communicate issues that relate to quality, process, consistency, content or delivery from the Editing team – being accountable for the team alongside the Post-Production Operations Manager

To identify and motivate new ways of working that improve the quality of work produced by Editors, and their ongoing development is facilitated

To conduct the course sign-off process for Editors

To work closely with the Digital Asset Management team to ensure all Post-Production assets are organised, accessible and that standardised workflow is adhered to

To ensure hardware and software issues are raised to the Technical team

Where needed, be able to solve technical issues, Strawberry, Editing Server, Editing Suites and Adobe Creative Cloud

To facilitate training on master templates and style guides relevant to Editors

To manage and facilitate HR processes for a small team of direct reports

To adopt a managerial role, overseeing a team of Editors to ensure that reasonable employee concerns are dealt with appropriately and that, in conjunction with People Development, any issues are flagged and resolved

To assist with the ongoing development of Editors by addressing their general post-production quality and maturity

To assist the Post-Production Operations Manager with recruiting and onboarding processes for new Editors

To assist with the effective recruitment, training and management of freelance and permanent Editors to understand Lobster Ink culture, workflow, and quality standards


Matric and relevant tertiary qualifications such as a Degree in Media Production or Post-Production or similar (Honors or Masters is an advantage)

5+ years editing and post production, operations and technical experience

Proven track record of a background in video editing

Previous management experience, managing small teams

An individual portfolio or showreel of projects essential

Skills, knowledge and attributes

A proficient Mac user

Experience with the Adobe Creative Suite of products (specifically Premiere Pro, After Effects and Photoshop)

Understanding of bitrate, aspect ratio and resolution in exporting videos from Premiere Pro CC & Media Encoder as well as various other encoding software

Learns quickly, comfortable with technology, and not intimidated by new systems

Strong video editing skills

Able to work in a highly collaborative environment with multiple stakeholders
